It is 7 o’clock in the evening. The once-bustling sidewalks are empty, but the streets are filled with noise. From buildings everywhere, explosions of sound erupt—cheers to mark the shift change of health care providers on the frontlines of COVID-19. A daily celebration of heroism lights up an incredibly dark time for us all.

Despite the barrage of tough-to-swallow news and the uncertainty that lies ahead, moments of positivity surround us. Physicians of all ages and levels of experience show up to work every day, putting themselves in harm’s way to help others. A ventilator manufacturer publicizes its design specifications to enable increased production worldwide. Companies pivot their factories to fulfill new needs, while others offer complimentary products and services to serve the greater good. Communities mobilize to support those in need.

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned life as we knew it upside-down. But, although the ensuing changes have been involuntary, not all of them have been for the worse. Collectively, we have grown more accustomed to recognizing the sometimes-unsung heroes, to prioritizing selfless acts of giving, and to discovering new ways to stay connected while physically further apart. These are the forces of good that will help us power through the unthinkable hardships and will stick with us forever.
