In January 2020, I traveled to Canada to capture Eyetube video content and, with that, tied in a visit to observe surgery with Iqbal Ike K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC. As those who have spent time in Ike’s OR know, it is a full educational experience. But, beyond the intricate surgeries and learning opportunities, what struck me most was the spectrum of individuals—surgeon, fellows, residents, nurses, anesthesiologists, patients, occasional industry representative, and, this time, an editor—who gathered from all over the world. In between moments of quiet concentration, valuable discussion took place among the various participants. Case after case, I observed that, despite the range of backgrounds and areas of expertise—or maybe because of them—each individual was respected as a valued component of the OR.
Like the state of a busy OR where the procedures are performed, MIGS is multifaceted. Numerous players are involved in the delivery and optimization of MIGS, and each assumes a key role in the process. In this issue of Glaucoma Today, various participants in the glaucoma space share their perspectives on learning about and delivering MIGS care. With insights from individuals in training; glaucoma, comprehensive ophthalmology, and optometry providers; and industry partners, these articles showcase a variety of viewpoints and experiences. As was the case in Ike’s OR, the end result is a cohesive unit that works harmoniously, fueled by a shared commitment to addressing glaucoma and minimizing the burdens on patients affected by the disease.
