“Interest in gonioscopy expanded rapidly in the early 1920s, largely thanks to Austrian ophthalmologist and artist Maximilian Salzmann, who recognized that the total internal reflection of the cornea could be overcome by using a convex contact lens, enabling consistent visualization of angle anatomy and pathology. This discovery laid the foundation for modern gonioscopy and fundamentally reshaped the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to glaucoma.”

Case Review: Pediatric Glaucoma Diagnosis

On Pupil Pod, Ogul Uner, MD, invites Ta Chen Peter Chang, MD, a pediatric glaucoma specialist, to review a case of a 9-month-old boy who presented with significant photophobia in both eyes. An examination showed an IOP of 32 mm Hg OD and 29 mm Hg OS, with moderate optic nerve cupping in both eyes. Dr. Chang shares what additional information he would look for to make a diagnosis of pediatric glaucoma. He also shares insights from the Childhood Glaucoma Research Network, a consortium of glaucoma specialists that has developed a consensus on diagnostic criteria.

Surgical Management of UGH Syndrome

On GT: The Podcast, glaucoma specialists share insights into treating uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema (UGH) syndrome. Roya Garakani, DO, outlines options for patients with UGH syndrome who require glaucoma surgery in addition to an IOL procedure. Then, Mahsaw Mansoor, MD, presents a case-based approach to the surgical management of in-the-bag UGH syndrome secondary to dead bag syndrome.
